Salon has Shadow's Paw of Approval
Shadow recommends the new line of salon-quality pet products carried by the Water's Edge Salon & Spa.
Shelly Devlin is an animal lover. She is also a businesswoman. Her salon and spa combines both of her passions. Her little dog Shadow comes to work most days. He is the hit of the day for many of her clients, she said.
"I would say 95 percent of my clients are among the ones who come here to unwind and relax and can almost always be found with Shadow snoozing in their lap while they enjoy a glass of wine as they receive one of our services," Devlin said.
Devlin said she heard about the new John Paul Pet products and tried them on her own pet. She found them as good as advertised. John Paul is the co-founder of Paul Mitchell hair care products.
"We decided since Shadow liked them we'd add them to what we have to offer clients at the salon," said office manager Sheri Gayer. "They've been a big hit especially when we point out they're tested on humans and recommended by Shadow. It has really been a good fit for us."
Devlin added the line in June and feels it is just one more service she can offer clients. Clients have been surprised they can buy pet shampoo and other pet-care products at the salon, but most have said it saves them a stop, which these days is a good thing, she said.
Gayer said the most popular product in the new product line has been the pet wipes.
"These are so handy to keep in the car clients tell us," she said. "They use them to wipe of muddy paws and to clean their pets between grooming sessions."
Devlin welcomes people who stop by to see what Water's Edge has to offer. For pet lovers in search of a relaxing salon visit, this might be the perfect place.
The salon and spa is located at 18 Orchard View Drive. For more information, call 421-1990.

Spa enjoys a day fit for princesses and lemonade
Kayla Pinard went all out with her lemonade stand on Saturday, May 10, at the Water's Edge Salon and Spa. She put sugar rims around the edges of the plastic cups and added wedges of limes. Kayla, 8, wore a pink princess dress to celebrate Hollywood Day at the salon.
The proceeds from Kayla's fancy lemonade went to Easter Seals.
To celebrate 18 years in business, Water's Edge planned 18 theme days with activities to coincide with each day's theme. The last one, Hollywood Day was all about glitz and glamour - and raising money for charity.
Shelly Devlin, Water's Edge owner, said she and the salon's employees are inspired by people like Samantha Gibbs, a child who has fought leukemia for the past three years.
Devlin closed her shop for one day three years ago so that Samantha and her family could enjoy a free spa day and have their nails, hair and makeup done. It was something Devlin said she could do to help the family get through a tough time.
The experience has led Devlin and her staff to do other fundraising and charity events.
The spa raffled its Queen/King Victorian spa package (a $275 value) and donated manicures to the Birthday Squad of the Manchester Caregivers Association. The squad goes to client's homes with a birthday cake and other goodies. Devlin said that a manicurist will go with the squad or invite the client to visit the salon for the manicure.
With each purchase of two cans of hairspray, Devlin donated a manicure to be included in the Birthday Squad's package. They called it 'Edie's Hair Spray Sale' in memory of a customer, Edith Hazelton, "and her love for hair spray," Devlin said.
Spa employees have fond memories of Hazelton's request that they use enough hairspray to maintain her hairdo for at least seven days, maybe more, they said.
Hollywood Day also included food donations from Blackberry Bakery and Rig A. Tony's to be enjoyed by salon guests and visitors.

Derry youngster, family enjoy the royal treatment at local spa
Samantha Gibbs, 3, continues to battle leukemia
A visit to Water's Edge Salon and Spa in Londonderry can provide a day of beauty and relaxation for the body and soul. For little Samantha Gibbs, a visit to the spa made her feel like a princess for a day.
Water's Edge owner Shelly Devlin closed her business at the Londonderry Workout Club on Monday so Gibbs, 3, and her family could come in and have a fun day of nails, hairstyles, and makeup - all free of charge - to help them get through some tough times.
Gibbs was diagnosed with leukemia earlier this year and has undergone strenuous chemotherapy treatments in past months in Boston. She and her two sisters, Madison, 4 and Elizabeth, 6, are being raised by their grandmother and Devlin hoped the trip to the spa was just what they needed to put a smile on their young faces.
"I wanted to do princess girl day for the," Devlin said as she showed Gibbs all the different colors of nail polish she could choose from for her special manicure. "I just wanted to do a fun 'girly' day."
While the three sisters were busy having their hair curled, their toes painted and their nails buffed, their grandmother was off enjoying facials and a massage from Water's Edge staff members who volunteered to come in and help with the special services.
When Gibbs was diagnosed with her illness, the community rallied around her and the family, and offered support, raised money to help finance medical expenses and reached out to show the girl just how special she was. Her preschool, Small Steps Early Child Development Center in Derry, and its staff organized events to help with the cause and said they were extremely fond of Samantha and her family and wanted to do as much as possible to help. Children at the school made homemade messages to send off and parents offered support with fundraising ventures.
For Devlin, making a difference in the life of this little girl who has had to endure so much was a "given." She said she first heard about Gibbs from reading the news and hearing of money collection sites spread around the community. She knew that opening her business for only this family for one day would be a great way to get their minds off difficult things and offer special services to three little girls who could dress up and be pampered.
Throughout the morning at the spa, the girls were treated to Danish, muffins, fruit, and juice boxes - and practically every color under the rainbow where nail polish is concerned. They even got to look at official hairstyle books and choose the look that was right for them.
With enough glitter scattered on their young faces and puffy cotton stuffed between each tiny toe, the Gibbs sisters let the Water's Edge staff fuss over them for a few hours. Devlin said it made their hearts feel good to know they were able to help keep spirits bright in this family.
Anyone wishing to help Samantha Gibbs can donate at any business around the area that is collecting funds, or people can donate to the Samantha Gibbs fund through BankNorth in Derry.
